Excerpt from a Work in Progress

Foreword (or, The Part No One Reads)

Mel Brooks was once asked what he believed the difference was between comedy and tragedy. He replied, “If I cut my finger, it’s a tragedy. If you fall into an open manhole, it’s a comedy.” I think that sums it up nicely. So, while I’m sitting here writing a tragedy, I hope you enjoy the comedy.

Free At Last! Almost.

"John," I told him over and over again, "That Scientology stuff is just wacky. What good is a religion based entirely on the overuse of paprika?" [see figure 1]

My opinions have often gotten me in trouble, almost as much as my associations. My unwillingness to bow to corruption, greed, and incompetence has cost me at least one gig. And voicing the things others are too afraid to voice has blacklisted me from more than one lesbian wine tasting event (I swear, girls, I thought it was common knowledge. Everyone had been saying it!).

But, upon reflection, would I do things differently?

Hmm. Unlikely.

As my year long period of corporate imprisonment comes to an end (read: noncompete clause), I can finally return to being an annoyance to state vendors who aren't me. VITA now lists me in their resource guide for the Web Standard (Did I mention I wrote the first two drafts?) , my business is an official SWAM business, and I'm listed in the eVA procurement thingamajig.

Now if only I can figure out a way to get everyone at my former job to go ahead and drink their cool aide like good little cultists and get ready for the comet, then the path up the mountain will be clear.

Hear me? I'm coming. And, unless something distracts me, like a computer game or a brightly colored piece of cloth, I'm going to roll over you (generic) drunken llamas like Hannibal through Burbank. Or words to that effect.

Speaking of standards, I've been working on an article on usability and government web sites. So far I've contacted about 15 state government sites. About 6 of them are managed by NIC Inc, including Virginia.gov, who recently put out a press release regarding all the research they did to improve their portal. "Perfect!" I thought, "Just what I need!" So I contacted the press contact associated with the press release and asked to see the data. Her response was to contact Virginia Interactive (an NIC Inc company) for the information.

Several weeks have passed. My deadline looms. And Virginia.gov hasn't even been polite enough to tell me to go to hell. To date, no NIC run state portal has been willing to produce any data to back up their claims of improved web usability. Nothing. Not a word.

I'm doing my best to write an unbiased article. But with my former alma mater hiding under their respective rocks, what choice do I have? If you didn't have the data, don't say you do in a press release! That's covered in Basic Lying 101!

Mark Twain said it best, "If you don't lie, you don't have to worry about remembering what you said."

Maybe I'm just miffed that corporate laziness and greed are making it difficult for me to make my $400. Maybe I'm just tired of being lied to by people who are supported by my tax dollars, but are somehow above the laws that govern the rest of us. And maybe it's just time to stop getting angry and start demanding accountability.

I'm sure I had a point when I began this tirade, but it has escaped me for the moment.

The Art of Managing IT

THE ART OF (MANAGING) IT
By
Christopher O’Kennon

Over two thousand years have passed since Sun Tzu wrote “The Art of War,” arguably the war-monger’s bible. Sun Tzu wrote down simple strategic truths in order to clearly define how war must be fought if it is to be won. Because, as we all know, even the most obvious of strategies can be overlooked. Especially if they’re written in Chinese.
Sun Tzu’s observations were so practical that extrapolations have been used for everything from managing employees to opening flower shops. He was, after all, stating the obvious. As I read through the Art of War, I began to realize another area where Sun Tzu’s work could be applied: Managing an Information Technology shop. It may not be exactly the same as waging war on the Huns, but given enough Mountain Dew, it’s mighty darn close.
So, with a nod to Sun Tzu, here are my equally obvious observations on managing IT in just about any business or government agency. Except I’m not writing it in Chinese. Feel free to translate.
Sun Tzu said:
“There are six situations that cause an army to fail. They are: flight, insubordination, fall, collapse, disorganization, and rout. None of these disasters can be attributed to natural and geographic causes, but to the fault of the general.”
An IT shop, just like an army, needs a good and functional command system. It takes more than having talented employees, it requires leadership that is able to pony up to the bar and get the job done. Slapping a title on someone and thrusting them into fire is no more effective in leading employees than it is in leading battle. A leader must know how to lead.
Sun Tzu addresses these points, of course, and so will I.
Decentralization People have the authority needed to achieve objectives, except for that which is expressly forbidden. This reduces the need for micromanagement and complex control structures, and frees the time of managers at all levels. Every leader commands his own unit, and every employee knows where his orders are coming from. This is especially important in this day and age, with terrorism and homeland security so much in sight. Take out the head and the body falls, take out the body and the head falls. This is the biggest vulnerability to the trend to centralize IT to the nth degree. A single point of failure that can cripple a state or a business. Spread it out, and it becomes more than the sum of its parts.
Freedom
Freedom to function must be delegated through the entire chain of command. Often the breakdown comes in the middle manager level, as middle managers become obsessed with their own feelings of power, and refuse to allow freedom to their subordinates. This isn’t to say middle managers should be removed, although at budget crunch time this is often tempting. Just make sure the middle managers are as well trained as other employees and familiar with what is expected of them.
Information Processing
When senior managers give up control, they must also give up a certain degree of information flow. If they insist on knowing every bit of information available, subordinates will be too busy creating reports to properly get anything done. Senior management’s job is not to approve the use of every nail and each line of code, but to enhance the speed of the work.
Stability
People relationships and informal systems give stability to the structure of the command system. Despite their faults, “good ol’ boy networks” and “back room bargaining” exist for a reason; they work. Not to say you should standardize your business model around these systems, but water cooler discussions often instill a sense of tradition, continuity, and permanence in the workplace. In IT shops where many employees are the equivalent of migrant labor, such stable foundations are important. Which leads to the next point, mutual trust.
Mutual Trust
Long-standing relationships create strong mutual trust. The Human Resource system that brings in new employees should be designed to create familiarity and bonding which is so important in mutual trust. Just as in war, in an IT shop – or any business – you want the person watching your back to be someone you trust to do the job.
A Willingness to Assume Responsibility
A decentralized command system leaves much to the discretion of the individual managers, and puts responsibility equally on their shoulders. Authority must be delegated. This not only serves to make a more flexible organization, but it allows employees throughout the command structure to experience ownership of their departments or units. Such ownership creates loyalty that money can not buy. Or at least not cheaply.
The Right and Duty of Subordinate Commanders to Make Decisions and Carry Them Out
Managers at all levels must be able to utilize their resources in whatever manner they feel is appropriate to achieve their objectives. If they must continuously worry about covering their butts or getting approval for every aspect of every duty, the system will rapidly become clogged with paperwork and doubt. A general can’t be on every battlefield, and a senior manager can’t have his hands in every piece of code and every minor problem.
Expect the Unpredictable
Expect that plans will fail, preparations will break down, scope will creep, and when you least expect it your primary and redundant systems will become engorged with grasshoppers. As the t-shirt says, “Expletive Happens.” Don’t try to overcome confusion by pausing to regroup after each breakdown. Instead keep everyone marching in the right direction. A properly trained team will land on their feet, even if they have to get there from their backs.
Training
Every manager manages the training of his or her employees. The manager doesn’t have to personally train, but they have to ensure that training is taking place. The better trained, the more likely an employee is to remain upright when adversity slams into them. Like any group of professionals, IT employees are constantly learning new things in their fields. They enjoy the challenge. If you, as a manager, can ensure them that they will receive the training they need and want, they will be far less likely to desert for a tastier position.

The choice is yours. You can manage your IT shop like a well-trained wall of marching power, or like a third grade field-trip to a candy factory. Just don’t say you weren’t warned; you were. Over two thousand years ago.

Why Star Wars Sucks

Let me start by saying that the Star Wars series of movies has had a profound influence on my life in many ways other than just keeping me from getting laid. And, for morons like myself, the series can do no wrong, rocks harder than a wet dream with Kiana and Mimi Miyagi, and defines a segment of the population's morals, ethics, and force power choices. I would go see a Star Wars movie no matter how crappy it is, even if it was just four hours of Yoda jerking off a walrus.

That said, in a rare moment of lucidity, I realized that George Lucas (sometimes referred to as Lord God Lucas) either took complete leave of his senses while filming the series, or is a closet moron. And I mean that in the best possible way.

I will explain. And, as always, if you don't agree, you have two choices. 1. Get Bent. 2. E-mail threats to me.

Amidala is a Racist
In the movie, "Attack of the Clones," Senator Amidala is shown superficially as a wise young woman with the hots for Anakin Skywalker (Spoiler-> the punk kid who becomes Darth Vader). But if you can get past the pert breasts and tight butt (Amidala was pretty cute, too), you notice why such a hot chick would fall for such a dork as Anakin. She, too, is a freak. Like so many other good looking babes, she has some fruit hidden in her carry-on, if you know what I mean.
Anakin goes on a fairly justified killing spree, and wipes out a tribe of Sand People, every man, woman, and child. He tells Amidala this, and she responds with some sappy, "That's ok, I still love you" crap. Good God, woman! You should be recoiling in horror! Little Ani just killed a hamlet full of women and children! Amidala might just as well have said, "It's ok. They were just sand people. It's not like they were nice white Naboo people."

Then they go off and frolic like rabbits, the stink of dead children still on little Ani. Couple of freaks.

Darth Vader Got Off Easy
At the end of the third/last movie of the series, Darth Vader redeems himself by saving Luke and killing the evil Emperor.

Yeah. Right.

Why was this such a big damn deal? Luke had kicked Darth's ass, and the Emperor had made it clear that Darth was damaged goods. So what else would a disgruntled fired employee do? Postal workers do it all the time, and none of them go to Heaven (although that could just be because they're postal workers). Darth decided to get back at his jerk of a boss, who had been ordering him around since he was a kid, probably sodomizing him and making him listen to opera, and other evil shit. So pick his bony ass up and toss him into a convenient although unlikely pit, and die satisfied.

Big friggin hero.

Foreigners Need to Learn English
Yoda has been around forever, is a Master Jedi, and still can't speak English worth a damn. Enough said. Illiterate little puke. I can't understand you, you green turd!

Done.

DRIVING CHANGE IN THE PORTAL LANE

Excerpt from an upcoming article..

DRIVING CHANGE IN THE PORTAL LANE
By
Christopher O’Kennon

I’ve been part of a team that’s been designing award winning government portals for more than eight years. We’ve won some awards along the way, and we’ve launched a stinker or two. You live and learn.

One thing I’ve noticed, through contests, studies, and review, is that most government portals fall into one of two categories. “Cloned Yesterday” and “Fairly Useless.” Several years ago, the vast majority of state government portals fell solidly into the “Fairly Useless” group. They hadn’t seen a significant facelift since pictures hit the Web, and they were really nothing more than poorly organized Word documents wrapped in random links and bad Frontpage themes. Often a valiant effort for the times, but hardly a stunning e-government presence. Designers just didn’t know how to design for the Web, or for their users. And it showed.

Luckily for all of us, portals have grown beyond that and now mostly fall into the “Cloned Yesterday” group. This is not as bad as it may sound, as the clones are at least doing a decent job and information and services are at last getting – albeit disjointedly – to the public. But there is room for improvement, if portal managers can get past a few hurdles and misconceptions. The biggest being:
State government portals have hit a plateau and have not significantly improved in the last three years.
When Virginia won the Best of the Web contest in 2002, they were seen as pretty innovative. They got that reputation by taking chances and backing up their choices with research. But that was also the first year that contests such as the Best of the Web – God Bless Them – began to take on the importance that they now have. Virginia slipped under the radar on that one, because just about every member of management and political authority was looking elsewhere. As it turned out, attention focused on the Best of the Web at about the time Virginia’s first place win was announced.

After that, every CIO or Governor decided that they wanted those first place awards.

Darth Kahuna and the Virtual Hotties

Darth Kahuna and the Virtual Hotties
By
Christopher O’Kennon

Dating in the 21st Century

The room was dimly lit and smelled of cheap wine and starchy carbohydrates. In front of me, leaning against the bar provocatively and wearing a low-cut blouse, was a painfully attractive young woman. I winked at her and waited for her response.
Another woman caught my eye. Just as attractive, but wearing a bikini and showing her ample wares in a way that caused a sensation similar to when I used to climb trees as a kid. She was a little young for me, but she lived closer and liked intellectual guys, so I winked at her.
I pushed my chair away from the computer, logged off, and went downstairs to feed the dogs.
A fictional account, but similar to what happens every day across the globe, as more and more people discover online dating, or, as one participant put it, “The Online Human Shopping Network.”
In my web surfing I had seen ads for several online personals, so I decided to check out a few to find out what the attraction was - you know, for “normal” people. I set up accounts using the nickname “darth_kahuna” and provided clever (I thought) answers to a variety of questions, witty (I thought) narratives of myself and my perfect partner, and uploaded images that, in most cases, did not even remotely resemble me. I buried a disclaimer deep in my narrative to let people know that I faked most of the pictures (the shots of my dogs playing poker were real), then took a look around.
I soon discovered that my original preconceptions about the virtual dating scene were way off. For one thing, it wasn’t just ugly and desperate men and women who used the service, although there were many of those folks as well. It wasn’t even full of wackos (about 3 percent[i] are pretending to be a gender that they aren’t, and a very fetching member of that gender to boot). Most of the people in these dating databases ranged from fairly average to extremely attractive. I wondered, why would all these hotties need to resort to such a “geeky” dating venue?
So I asked them.
The responses were as varied as the respondents.
Jennifer, a very intelligent and successful woman, described her reasons for using an online service: “I decided to use an online dating service because I've found that in my daily life, there is so little time to meet single people. Between work, school and all the stuff in between, there really isn't a whole lot of spare time left. And, of course, irony of ironies, technology hasn't given us more spare time.”
Technoprincess, answered the same question with, “a friend signed me up as a joke…but I have met several interesting people.” Her photo, as striking as it was, garnered more attention than her profile. Most of the guys who e-mailed her, she said, commented on the picture first (yeah, we’re like that). She also went on to say that she has met more white men online than she normally meets at bars or clubs, as the intimidation factor is different online.
Gia, who I ran into on two different services, is quick to befriend strangers and seems to have no shortage of real-world fans. This sort of “window shopping” cuts through a lot of the trial-and-error, she says. A long distance relationship is not what she’s interested in, so seeing the general area where a person lives is helpful.
There are also the oddballs lurking in these communities, just as they lurk in real life. And, as someone once said (might have been me), the world has no shortage of beetles or bungholes. One fellow I encountered, who we will call James (‘cause that’s his name), impersonates an attractive and sexually eager Chinese woman. Why he does this is unclear. In our discussion he offered several excuses, ranging from revenge at being “pranked” himself to weeding out competition. This strikes me as overanalyzing what gets him his jollies, but to each his own. I knew immediately he was a fake, as his profile was written the way a guy fantasizes a woman would talk, as opposed to how they really do. That, and I recognized the soft porn model he used for his photo (let’s not discuss how I became so familiar with porn models). He had no qualms about misleading so many guys, and probably still carries on this charade. No one’s perfect, right? If they were, I wouldn’t have so many bodies shoved in the back of my freezer. But I digress.
At one time the only people who would use a service like match.com [ii], Yahoo Personals[iii], or MySpace [iv] were super-geeks or the circus freaks with a laptop they could strap to their misshapen hides. Then again, at one time there were no images on the Web and in order to see dirty pictures you had to steal them from a book store. Times change. The world of online dating has exploded in a way that only technology can allow. Everyone from lonely farmers to exotic models to overworked professionals are using this new means to an end.
And it seems to be working just fine.
Many of its users would say even better than the old way. You don’t have to worry about going home in the rain or sitting through endless pickup lines just to get a table. If someone comes off obnoxious, you delete their e-mail and move on. You don’t even have to worry about thinking of new ways to tell someone to “get bent.” And if you somehow manage to run into them on the street, you can just claim Windows ate your e-mail.
Sure, you can’t count on your potential partner to be too drunk to tell you’re ugly and overweight, but you can always doctor up a picture using PhotoShop and hope to God you can get that liposuction before you have to meet your dream date in person. Low resolution can cover a multitude of sins.

15 Minutes of Fame

And it isn’t just traditional dating that is done online. Sites like MySpace and Friendster[v] have created communities based on networking and inviting “friends” into your group. Although some are there looking for physical gratification, many are looking for intellectual stimulation and expression. Relationships based on mutual interests and online chatting form every day, and often spill over into other online worlds (Blogs[vi] like Live Journal[vii] and its darker companion, Dead Journal[viii]) and e-mail relationships. If you just want to find interesting people to chat with, or a workout partner in Peoria who enjoys Kendo, you can go that route and save wear and tear on your shoes.
Many of you will have read that last paragraph and said to the person in the stall next to you, “What the heck was that about?” Welcome to the world of true equality, where everyone and anyone who has something to say, or thinks they do, can be heard.
Blogs are a logical extrapolation of common Web technology. In days past if you wanted to put up a Web site, you needed money and skill. You had to get someone to host your site, an editor to create the HTML or the code that displayed the page, and you needed software to move the code from your computer to the server hosting your Web site (if this is still too technical for you, just skip the next few paragraphs or go back to watching Family Feud reruns). Now, all it takes is an internet connection and a browser. You log on to your Blog page (it used to be called “Web Log,” but that took just too damn long to say) and type away the minutia of your mundane life. It’s a beautiful exercise in vanity and self indulgence, and I have one myself[ix] and relish knowing that some server is backing up my boring crap to be saved for decades.
Then the online dating networks merged with the Blog communities, and hybrid communities were formed, like MySpace. Some were general meeting places, and others had more specific goals like One Model Place[x], which caters to models, actors, and photographers. You can find me there as well, in case you need a bitter, out-of-shape model for your next catwalk shoot.
Lucky for an old fart like me, I know someone young and hip who can explain all this to me (who I met online, of course). Katiebird, a young woman who serves as my conduit to the hip and trendy, described the force behind the evolution aptly. “There isn't a person out there that wouldn't like to be popular; famous in some little way. “ For many, the online life has replaced night life. It’s cheaper and less painful. Movies, drinks, and all the standard frills of going out can take a heavy toll on your wallet, as well as recovering from all those drinks needed to make the person across from you sound interesting. It’s socializing, and its promotion.
Yes, promotion. You network and you promote yourself. Sometimes to make friends of similar interests, sometimes to break into an industry like modeling, writing, or whatnot. It no longer costs millions to be heard, it costs pennies. It’s open season on information, my friends. Everyone’s out there if they’re anyone, or if they want to be someone.

Aimless Wanderings

Many people have the impression that the Internet is nothing but porn and stock quotes (there’s a joke circulating that if you took all the porn off the internet, there would be just one web site left. And that site would be a petition to bring back the porn). Although it may look unorganized and obscene to many, the truth is far more complex. As with any collection of organisms, the Web has grown on its own with little regard for planning. A million people connected together can produce quite an effective organism, even if they can’t physically touch each other. Life evolves; nature finds a way.
The Web is as much a part of nature as a stream or a mountain. Life begets life, even if the form is new.
Internet communities of all shapes and sizes are proliferating and allowing people to interact with those they may never have otherwise even imagined existed. Some see a time where not having an identity on the Web will be as big a handicap as not having electricity, or transportation, or one of your major senses. There are dangers lurking out there, but there are also untold opportunities.
So the next time you find yourself sitting around grumbling about all the losers in your town, fire up your modem and meet someone new. Just be sure to watch your six, as you never know if you’re talking to Jade_Princess_001 or Hairy_Stones_ownz_Joo.

A Day in MY Office

I spent two years working as a nurturing thug at a psychiatric hospital. I wrestled kids who hadn’t bathed in so long their hair looked like cheese and taking a crap on their head made them smell better. I knew a guy with Alzheimer’s who tried to have sex with an air hockey table. A girl who tried to kill herself by eating her used tampon. Politicians. But the craziest person I was ever forced to associate with, outside of family, was Alison.

I was working at a startup IT company in the days when that meant something. We were all going to be so rich we could wipe our asses with other rich people. We had six employees but thought that a seventh was needed. We interviewed several people, but we ended up hiring Alison based on two criteria: one of us thought she would inject a certain female quality to our work, and one of us thought she had a nice ass. I won’t say what position I felt was more important.

Alison did well at first. Meaning, she wore skimpy outfits that kept the programmer’s aroused and spent as much time as possible bending over and rubbing ice on her nipples. None of the single guys thought that unusual, as all the women in the comics they read did that sort of thing. Those of us who had gotten laid in the current decade thought it a bit odd, but nothing more than that. We were, after all, a bunch of guys hopped up on Mountain Dew and chocolate.
Then, like some sort of demon being shit upon the world, she went sour on us. Maybe she wasn’t used to working on tight deadlines. Maybe the casual attitude of the office rubbed her the wrong way. Maybe one night while she was devouring the souls of babies some gigantic slobbering undead troll beat her about the head and neck until she turned into the wacked out shitstorm we met the next day.

Anyway, she became a mess. And, being one observant motherfucker, I had no idea what I was doing when I pushed her buttons one afternoon. Using her own set of rules and logic, I managed to prove to her that she was a bad person. Now, that’s pretty hard to do, even if the person you’re talking to is a mental midget, as Alison most assuredly was. I just showed her, using charts, graphs, and balloon figures, that the things she defined as “bad” were the same things she did on a day-to-day basis. She left for the day with a trail of smoke drifting from her ears, smelling like burned cotton candy.

There was still the possibility that she would recover, but that sort of thing just wasn’t in the cards for poor Alison. She threw this gigantic party for some odd charity. All the good ones had been taken, she explained, so she had to settle for Underachievers Anonymous. She spent a lot of money, and pre-sold over a hundred tickets. Aside from the band, no one showed up. Hell of a thing. She had even given everyone in the office free tickets. Just her luck there was a Samurai Jack marathon on the Cartoon Channel, and none of us could make it. Alison was drunk twenty minutes into her party, and having sex with the band after an hour. To give you an idea how lame the whole thing was, even after the band had violated every orifice of her intoxicated body, and performed acts that I frankly can’t even understand, they still insisted on getting paid for the gig.

After that, she just wasn’t the same. One would have normally assumed that would be a good thing, as Alison’s “same” was pretty spooky. But she instead sauntered all the way off the deep end, and dove head-long into a category I like to call: “Supremely Fucked Up.”
One day, when the stress of having to work a full four hour day was at its worst, she stormed up to my desk and looked me right in the eye. “YOU!” she bellowed, as if I didn’t know I was sitting there. Always the peace-maker, I calmly responded with, “What the fuck do you want, you twisted cancerous cornhole?”

She then proceeded to explain to me that it was my fault she was putting on weight, and furthermore, FURTHERMORE, she took my efforts to make traffic around her home more and more difficult to drive through as an act of war.
Somewhat taken aback that she had seen through both my telepathic ability to engorge her fat cells and summon random cars to drive aimlessly around her house, I quickly checked to make sure no one took her seriously. Everyone was staring at us like anime characters stuck in the headlights of a 1976 Ford Bronco.

Since the possibility of defusing the situation had slipped away with her sanity, I said instead, “You’re just mad I won’t have sex with you.”

Truth be told, I wouldn’t have sex with her for two very solid reasons. The first being that my girlfriend didn’t approve of such behavior. Neither did my wife. And when the two of them agreed on something like that, I just don’t bother to go against them. The second reason was that I have a strange inability to put my dick into a woman who physically revolts me. I tried once in college, and the projectile vomiting was just a hassle. Plus it tends to cause others in the immediate area to vomit as well. Nothing like seeing the person you’re trying to diddle vomiting on your dog, who’s vomiting on your fish, all because you vomited on all of them.
But I digress.

Although I may have been way off-base, I still hit something, and Alison screamed something at me that, to this day, I swear was the word “strawberry,” and stormed out of the office. About ten minutes later – the exact amount of time it takes to get to the lobby and notice you forgot something – she stormed back in, grabbed her purse, and stormed back out again.

The guy sitting next to me, who we will call Roger, watched her walk away and said, “She really knows how to blow an exit, doesn’t she?”

“I thought the term was ‘rimjob’?”

Roger looked at me, as if I didn’t understand his point. Very likely, thinking back.

“You sure you didn’t have sex with her?” he asked.

“Who can be sure of anything?” I said, hoping to sound profound, as I’d seen the pictures he took of him and Alison “blowing an exit,” as he put it.

“Yeah,” said Roger in much the same way another man would say, “What the hell are you talking about?”

Men 101

It always amazes me when people ask me for advice. Somewhere along the line I must have developed a facade of scholarly wisdom, which I imagine would collapse if anyone saw me spending weeks trying to get my e-mail to work when my modem was unplugged or screaming at the desk I built in my living room that was too big to get through the door to the bedroom.

But still they ask me for my sage observations, most often on relationships. I guess people figure that someone who has had such a dismal string of horribly dysfunctional relationships as myself must have learned something from the ordeal. What I’ve learned is that I’m not good at it. But along the way I picked up a number of questions from women about the male of the species, and I’ve had a revelation that can all be summed up in one simple sentence:

Women don’t know about men what they think they know about men.

Okay, so it’s not Zen. But it’s still important. Achieve satori some other time.I know there will be women who will get upset at this hole I’m about to punch in their world-view, just as there will be some of my fellow testicle-laden who won’t like me opening their bag of amorous tricks. But there’s no reason for people to be bumping horns when a little education can ease the tension in so many relationships.

So let’s get started and watch for flying glass…

Harry and Sally
To start with, let’s be clear about the population I’m talking about. The following observations don’t include all men. Just 99 percent of the heterosexual men in America. That one percent may appear on Jerry Springer all they want to contest my findings. They’re outliers and of no significant statistical importance (how’s that for a brush-off?). Also, although hard to believe, there are actually women out there who willingly take advantage of men (just as, according to urban legend, there are men who take advantage of women). This information is not for them, as they know it already and are real stinkers, anyway.

Onward.

It seems every woman in America has seen the movie, “When Harry Met Sally.” Since men like being around women, the consequence of this desire is that they too have seen the movie. But both sexes see something totally different in the film. Women see the two genders being close friends without sex entering the picture, and men see a guy who finally got laid after sticking to his guns for 12 years (and let me tell you, I’m sure those guns were hurting by then). The movie is, of course, just a movie. But an important message is still delivered. Men and woman can’t be friends without sex getting involved.

Before getting worked up, let me add a few conditions to that statement. It doesn’t mean that every woman will be having sex with every guy she talks to. That would be neat, but it just isn’t practical. What it means is that, if a man and a woman are close friends, at least one of them will be sexually attracted to the other. If both couples are married, this tension is rarely a big problem as both are hopefully getting sex from their spouse (Yeah. Right). And some guys are able to control the urges and be “just friends” anyway.

But the sex is still there.

For some reason many women vehemently contest this. This is simply because they assume that, if they aren’t sexually attracted to their male friend, then the feeling must be mutual. Nope. Here’s where I start spilling blood secrets: One of the oldest tricks in the male sexual hunter’s handbook is to become a woman’s friend so she will realize how wonderful you are and agree to go to bed with you (I’m told this trick is occasionally borrowed by women to use on men. Turnabout is fair play, right?). Many times it becomes obvious that this trick isn’t going to work, but the guy sticks to it for a very long time, hoping the woman will change her mind, or get very drunk at some point where an “accident” is able to happen.Yeah, maybe it’s a dirty trick. Welcome to the world of Sometimes Life Sucks.

But don’t suddenly abandon all your male friends, annoyed that all they want to do is get in your pants. Sometimes a very strange thing happens. The man begins to enjoy the woman’s friendship despite the frustration of not achieving his goal and the hell of listening to her talk about all her other boyfriends and sexual adventures. Oh, he still wants to have sex with her, but it no longer becomes the goal of the relationship (but he’d certainly be willing to go a few rounds of mattress dancing if asked).

Many women will, at this point, still deny that their male friend has any sexual interest in them. “Aren’t we all civilized adults?” you may ask. “Are men so base that something as insignificant as sex has become so important (I actually heard a woman with a Ph.D. in Psychology ask these questions on a national talk show. What she failed to realize was that a Ph.D. doesn’t suddenly obliterate years of personal bias and socialization. Men just aren’t the same as women)?” Sex, insignificant? Biologically speaking, anything done by an organism after sex is irrelevant to the species. And to men, sex is what makes the world what it is. Woman (for reasons I will go into in this article) make very poor friends for men. We can’t figure them out and they don’t see things the way we do. But they have certain aesthetic pluses that the Guys don’t have.

But the sex is still there.

So here’s some advice if you really care about your male friends. First, don’t assume they aren’t sexually interested. They are. Keep this in mind. Second, many of them might actually have fallen in love with you along the way, as what better mate is available than one who’s your best friend? If you don’t feel the same way towards them (which, since life is cruel and unfair, you probably don’t), then be conscious of the possibility, and don’t spend all your time talking about how horny you are, how you can’t find a decent man, or just rambling on about guys you’d like to diddle. This is not only insensitive and annoying to the guy, but it can be outright torture if the poor sod’s in love with you.

And, the most important thing: The sex is still there.

Addendum A: The Sex Joke
Jokes about sex tend to pop up between men and women who are friends, which brings up another entertaining difference between men and women. Men don’t joke about sex with women, at least not in the traditional sense. Oh, men will say things about sex that are funny, but they aren’t really jokes. Take a common situation where a man and a woman who are friends meet in passing in the halls where they both work. The man says, “When are we going to get together for that orgy, ha-ha?” And the woman responds, “As soon as I buy some new leather pants, ha-ha.” The woman is making a joke and has no real intention of ever having sex with the friend (regardless of her position on leather). The man, on the other hand, would have no problem going through with the joke if the woman agreed, and is in fact hoping for it. He’s saying something serious disguised by humor, because he feels he doesn’t measure up in some way needed to rate sex with the woman, but still needs to make an attempt. But if the response is negative, they can both laugh it off.

Essentially, men make real jokes about sex with a women as often as wolves joke about hunting down a gazelle. Something that important isn’t to be taken lightly. Jest, in this situation, is almost purely a socialized cloak of protection.

After all, you can tell when a male first becomes interested in women when he starts looking at girls the way he used to look at a chocolate chip cookie. And no 5 year old would scoff at a chocolate chip cookie.

Open House
I will be the first to admit this one is silly, but it amazes me how many women are completely unaware of it, and are stunned when it smacks them in the face. Woman assume that a man will know the difference between what they consider signs of sexual interest and every other human behavior. The truth is, to a man, every human behavior by a woman is a sign of sexual interest. For those of you still in college, I’ll phrase this law properly: Any non-negative interaction with a woman will be interpreted as a willingness to have sex, or at the very least a willingness to consider the prospect.

It’s not just a matter of smiling at a guy, or touching him innocently, or even carrying on a conversation with him every day in the company break room. It’s also sitting next to him on the bus, working out at the same gym at roughly the same time, being employed by the same corporation, or asking him if he’ll please stop peeing on your lawn. I have a female friend who sold her car to a guy who she didn’t know at all. He just saw the ad for the car in the paper, stopped by, and decided to buy the piece of crap. During the test drive the guy made a pass at her, and she was flabbergasted. I then had to point out that she could have avoided the whole incident if she had shot him in the leg first, but otherwise: she sold him a car, she must want to go out with him.

Selling a car should be a fairly sexually-neutral transaction, right? Only if you sell it to another woman. As long as you don’t reek with the stink of death (and sometimes then too), with a man it’s a maybe.

Sure, this all borders on the desperate, but it’s a very male process. Men tend to hunt for mates in the same way the US fought the Vietnam War. Blow the bejesus out off everything in sight, and hopefully you’ll hit something important (actually, I think we fought most of our wars that way. Shows what happens when you put guys in charge of things. A perfectly good conflict deteriorates into a shooting match…). But then biology dictates this kind of process. A few zillion years ago cave guys were designed to run up to unsuspecting women as they were trimming their teeth, have sex with them before they realized what was going on, and run off before getting a mastodon bone shoved up their south stabilizer. Time may have advanced, but men haven’t. Why mess with what works?

Is there anything you can do about this? Aside from poking every guy you aren’t attracted to in the eye with a sharp stick, no. It’s my experience women are fairly skilled at dispensing rejection, so the only problem is getting into sticky situations. Just know that when you accept rides from strangers or get rescued from disasters, the guys involved will probably hit on you. Have your response prepared in advance, and maybe keep that sharp stick handy.

Men are Stupid and Women are Crazy.
One of the greatest obstacles in men and women understanding each other is that we just don’t think the same way. There’s even some scientific basis to this. For example, when a man and a woman enter a room where a party is going on, they each notice different things. The woman is more likely to notice the people, what they’re wearing, and what they’re talking about. The man is more likely to notice the stereo system, the furniture, and the type of car pictured on the wall calendar. Men and women think in different ways and have different priorities in the way their brains process information. There are even gender differences in brain size (some say the reason men have larger brains than women is that they need more just to keep up. I and my huge brain reserve judgment).

Whether this relates to the most important difference, or if it’s just socialization, I don’t know. But men tend to be simple, direct, rational thinkers and women are -– well -- something else entirely. Having worked in the mental health industry for several years, I know crazy people when I see them. I’ve seen all variety of fruits, nuts and assorted granola clusters. In fact, that’s where I first heard mental patients lovingly referred to as “fruits, nuts, and assorted granola clusters.” Some of the most intriguing of mental patients are the schizophrenics. They have truly odd ways of viewing reality. So do women.

Not to say that women are schizophrenic (there are treatments for schizophrenia…). And I’m certainly not saying that men are totally rational. No human being is ever totally rational. But women are so far from what we men consider “normal” that it frightens us into accepting it as part of the status quo and frustrates us into banging our heads against walls, both literal and figurative.

Of course, it has crossed my mind that this irrationality is a mere sham, a put-on to keep men off-balance and to avoid many of life’s difficult choices. But, unless there’s a special seminar that women attend in the bathroom (which would explain the group exodus to the potty), there’s no way all women could be so good at it. I have a sister, and she’s just as irrational and has been so since puberty. Before puberty she was just a little silly…

This, I imagine, is the point in the argument where I’m going to be asked to cite some examples (by women, of course. Any man who’s been in a relationship with a woman has no need of proof). I’ve collected some statements from women that I think prove my point. Mixed in are two statements from actual psychiatric patients, to show how difficult it can be to tell the difference.

1.) “I only date men I don’t like. That way when we break up, it isn’t too big a deal.”
2.) “I married him because he’s a temporary fixture in my life. I never dated you because I want you around forever.”
3.) “I wear the purple suit to keep the assassins working for Margaret Thatcher from eating my spleen.”
4.) (immediately after having sex)”Do you find me attractive?”
5.) “My father tried to kill me by training a water snake to jump into the boat while we were fishing, and only my aluminum foil underwear saved me.”
6.) “I have to break up with you because it interferes with my fencing practice.” “But you don’t fence.” “So?”
7.) (A Chinese friend, calling me in tears after having fought with her boyfriend, thrown his belongings down the stairs, and put shaving cream in all of his socks)”He said China was communist!” “Uh…it is.” “But he said China makes lousy cars!” “Do they?” “Yes, but it was how he said it!”
8.) “I find money and looks unimportant in a man. It’s character and intelligence that are important. And I like a man that can make me laugh.”

As you can tell, the statements made by mental patients and women are very similar in their unique grasp of reality (3 and 5 were patients. 8 was a trick question, it was said by a mental patient who was a woman).

And I’m fully aware that many of the statements shown as examples of irrational thinking are in fact just ploys being used to break up with a man. The amazing thing is not that such strange excuses were used (it’s all just a variant of the “It’s not you, it’s me” excuse, perfected by George Costanza, which is in fact “It’s not me, it’s you”). What truly boggles the male mind is that such left field remarks appeared to be rational excuses to the women who made them.
Women seem to have the strange ability to hold two conflicting concepts in their mind at the same time, and view them both as true. Granted, this allows them to be somewhat more flexible in day-to-day activities and often recover faster from adversity than men, but to men it is totally alien. And it seems to us that women, in thinking like this, find themselves continuously amazed at the logical and obvious outcome of their actions.

Men, on the other hand, are very simple (no jokes, please). We have concrete rules of behavior and interaction that can be learned by anyone, and we do not deviate from these rules except as a means to get sex (the exception to all rules). If women took the time to learn these rules (some do) and would follow them in their own life, we would all be better off, although we’d have more than a passing resemblance to Klingons.

Now here’s the rub, so to speak. Is there any reason at all for women to change their strange way of thinking? Nope. Because men have, and always will, put up with it. We may retreat to our Keeps to cower and shake, but we still put up with it. Why? One big reason in one little word: Sex.

You just can’t beat City Hall.

Finally…I don’t expect anything will change after this article, except possibly my relationship with my Mother. I’ve told my female friends this stuff many times, and most of them prefer not to believe it. It’s too annoying to consider one’s preconceptions may be false. That’s why the sitcom “Third Rock From the Sun” is still on the air, despite sucking on a galactic level. Someone important is desperately clinging to the idea that it’s funny.

It’s also important to note that, like my critique of television sitcoms, this all falls under the category of opinion. You have the right to believe it or not believe it. All I have to base this on is what men do and think, and what woman seem to believe men do and think. You are welcome to take away from the experience as much or as little as you want.

But when you find yourself in a position that could have been avoided by simply paying attention, you have only yourself to blame. And if you ever see me on the street and I seem to be staring at you as if you were a chocolate chip cookie, for God’s sake have sex with me…
